Core Programs – Canoe and Kayak

Core programs are designed for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced skill levels.

We offer both Kayak, Tandem and Solo Canoe disciplines.

Our core programs are approximately aimed for age 12 and older (depending on size and motivation).

Our highly qualified and effective instructors shape each program to meet YOUR needs.

 

Custom Group Programs

Women’s groups, school groups, summer camps or a family reunion!? We can focus your expectations and goals into an incredible program.  We can support you to run a new river, fine-tune skills, learning new skills, yoga retreats or overnight/wilderness camping skills.

 

Downriver Trips/Guiding

Join us for river running instruction and tips or allow us to guide you down your dream trip.  We will take you to any exceptional rivers in Ontario, western Quebec or any other dream location. We can focus on teaching you river running skills, decision making approaches, risk management or a variety of your groups specific needs.

 

 

 

Introductory Kayak or Canoe

What will I learn!?
  • Details of the boat and proper use of equipment
  • Strokes required to steer a boat on flat and gentle current
  • How to navigate simple whitewater maneuvers
  • How to identify whitewater hazards

Recommended for folks who…

  • Have NEVER experienced whitewater
  • Have NEVER experienced the boat they want to try
  • Haven’t paddled in YEARS
  • Want to learn how to paddle with a new partner who has no experience.

Programs are safely paced to particular needs and abilities

ORCKA and Paddle Canada Certifications for beginners are available, inquire for details or discuss directly with your instructor.

Intermediate Kayak or Canoe

Intermediate Kayak or Canoe

Fine-tune your strokes and perfect your whitewater maneuvers!  Be prepared to negotiate more challenging rapids.

Intermediate programs are designed  to help you achieve personal paddling goals.

Whether you aim to be self-sufficient, capable of running multi-day trips or you would simply like to brush up on skills, this course can get you there.

  • Available to kayak, solo or tandem boaters.
  • If you are a tandem boater without a partner, no worries, you can paddle with another participant or with the instructor.
  • Gather your friends and organize your own course or book into a scheduled course.

Advanced Kayak or Canoe

Advanced Canoe and Kayak Play-boating courses are suitable for those that have experienced the water and are comfortable in their boats.

  • Learn new techniques
  • Receive coaching for an instructor course
  • Refresh your skills with the support of an instructor.
  • We can create an advanced course suitable to your needs.
  • We are also able to venture to other rivers for an added challenge!
  • Your instructor will work with you to make the course suit your needs!

Prerequisites:

Kayaking:

  • Always rolls in whitewater
  • Self Rescues in Class 3 water
  • Owns personal cold water immersion gear (Dry Top)

Canoeing:

  • Basic River Running Knowledge
  • Completes Advanced Paddling Moves at Jessup’s, (S Turn, Ferry, Enter/Exit Current)
  • River Rescue Knowledge and Practice

We have a range of play boats and equipment for our courses.

Whitewater Tripping

  • Planning your own excursion?
  • Need a refresher on how to safely navigate a wilderness trip?
  • Want to graduate from flat-water trips to whitewater adventure?

Our experienced whitewater tripping guides can offer support with river running approaches, whitewater rescue, wilderness first aid and safety and general tripping practices.  We can even join you on your trip!

All of our guides have extensive back country experience, Wilderness First Responder certification and Whitewater River Rescue certification.

ORCKA Canoe and Kayak Certification

Our in-house ORCKA Certified Instructors offer a variety of whitewater canoeing and kayaking certifications and coaching.  We can instruct canoe, kayak, open boat, river running and flatwater courses.

Please see our course calendar for group course dates and inquire regarding private or specific courses.

ORCKA courses are offered as group, semi-private or private.

WHAT THIS INCLUDES
This price includes camping fees on site, instruction and testing.  
 
It does not include price of annual ORCKA membership fee and program fee ($85). This needs to be paid to ORCKA by their website before the course starts. Once signed up for the course, the ORCKA canoeing manuals will be sent out pre course.

  • Course will cover full content of ORCKA Canoe Tripping 3, and take place primarily during a 5 day canoe trip down the Madawaska River, from Palmer Rapids, to the town of Griffith.

  • Course cost will be under $500 or less, depending on enrolment.  This is done to keep cost low.
  • Food and Equipment not included to keep cost low.
  • Rental gear potentially available from Paddler Co-op-inquire if needed.
